Colonial Middle School students make greeting cards for veterans
Fresh off of their induction on Oct. 29, some of Colonial Middle School’s new National Junior Honor Society (NJH) members put two of the NJHS pillars into action by making greeting cards for veterans.
The students made 84 cards to donate to The Giving Tree, an organization that partners with schools to complete a variety of different service projects. The Giving Tree delivered the cards to various veteran organizations in time for Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
Service and citizenship are two of the five pillars of NJHS. To be invited to apply, students must have earned Distinguished Honor Roll for all of 6th and 7th grade. In addition to outstanding academic performance, NJHS members must also demonstrate excellence in citizenship, leadership, service, and character. Ninety-six students were inducted this year.
The Veterans Day project will likely be the first of others throughout the year. Each member is expected to complete at least nine hours of community service between November and May. In addition to encouraging service-minded individuals, NJHS membership helps students to develop leadership skills, participate in service, and uphold strong character.
