Sparking interest in firefighting and fire safety
As a warm up to Fire Safety Week, members of the Harmonville and Plymouth fire departments visited the students at Ridge Park and Plymouth elementary schools to spark their interest in firefighting and being safe in an emergency.
Firefighter Mike Sturm introduced the children to the gear and equipment used in fighting fires—giving students an up close look at what they wear and some of the equipment they use.

The children were excited to see one of their teachers wearing the firefighter gear.
“The coolest thing was big giant scissors, because you can squeeze it and pull a door off,” said Ridge Park first grader Mack Spinner.
The students also got three things to do for homework: remember what to do when a smoke alarm sounds, check their smoke detectors to make sure they’re working, and create an exit plan.
“My favorite thing was the smoke alarm, because I like the sound of it,” said Ridge Park first grader Lennie Knobbs.
“If the alarm goes off, you run outside, because the fire is in the house,” added classmate Adalyn Rogalski. “And leave your pets in the house, and the fire people will take it.”
Mr. Sturm grew up through the Colonial School District and enjoys sharing his passion with the students.
“I’m fortunate enough to get on a firetruck every day, and I still love doing it. It’s every kid's dream to be a firefighter,” said Mr. Sturm. “It’s exciting to have them see what we do and inspire them a little bit and have them get an idea of fire safety in the home.”
Thank you to the Harmonville and Plymouth Fire Departments for visiting our schools and keeping our community safe.

Third-grade students from teacher Amy Campbell's class meet Arson K9 Watson, a dog who assists the Conshohocken Fire Department. With Watson is Captain Megan Klosterman.
